SJS Magazine Fiasco

Okay, David's done bashing Moral Education. Now let's focus our attention to the school magazine. I would like to post a review of it since it's so serious that it warrants reviewing(especially the sanity of the team involved).

Not all of us have our copies yet, but most of us have seen it, and I think I speak for everyone when I say it falls way below expectations, and that it will forever remain a black mark in the school's magazine history.

First of all, the cover. Before I criticize it further, a positive note. It's a lot cleaner than last year's, which was a total mess despite being more attractive. This year's magazine lacked a school logo(What kind of school magazine doesn't have it's own school logo!?), but it's a lot cleaner in jet-black. Though the 'kuih-lapis' design leaves much to be desired, as well as being rather ambiguous to it's symbolism.

Second of all, the teachers 'Golden Quotes'. This by itself ruined the entire magazine even if the other blemishes were cleared up. I say so because it's blatantly insulting, farcical, appallingly abysmal and possessing questionable taste. As far as I know, the only magazines that badmouth people are tabloids. Is our school magazine becoming a tabloid, then? Because a lot of teachers are publicly humiliated by the abusive remarks. Indeed we're all very ashamed that the EDITORS let this disrespectful piece of trash enter the magazine. Where's the content control? Isn't that the EDITORS job?

Third of all, is the choice of publishers. The form 5 pages are horribly mangled, especially Form 5B; you can barely identify the faces. As for our class profiles, they've replaced my 'Godfather' font with some crappy generic font. That aside, our poem page has been horribly mangled and printed way out of dimensions. How that happened, I don't know, because I clearly knew I designed the pages in the A4 format. So how it got messed up is anyone's guess. As for the potpourri pages, a.k.a. Gallery, some of the photos were badly printed, in the sense that you have missing ink on some of the heads. So you'll be seeing white patches on some teacher's heads in the photos.

Hmm, I think I've pointed out most of the errors on the school magazine. Again, I reiterate, we're ashamed to be Josephians because of this piece of trash we call a magazine. I've collected some quotes from some of our brothers about their views on the magazine:

"It's getting lame." - Richard Liaw, in response to the fact that certain song lyrics and titles of a popular movie were over-used

"Jokes are in bad taste." - Anonymous Teacher, after being asked for comment on the 'Golden Quotes'

"Front cover has no meaning." - Anonymous Teacher, commenting on the ambiguous front cover

"The reports are so puerile." - David Ling, especially the one concerning the mooting team

"They seem to be running out of ideas." - Noel Tay, echoing Richard's remarks

"Disappointing!!" - Ivan Marland, after perusing much of the magazine

"Our final year and this is what we get!?" - Javier Teo, also after perusing the magazine

"A most creative way to waste good printer ink." - Isaac Lawai, referring to the front cover, which he thought looked like a test paper for printer ink

"The printers suck!!" - Pan Jia Wern, after seeing the mangled pages and whited-out heads

"Good on the outside, bad on the inside." - Chan Kok Ann, after perusing the magazine

"Pictures aren't clear." - Asyraf, on the poor quality of photos in the magazine

"It sucks ass! ..|.." - Joel Then, after perusing the magazine

"I'm not going to comment because someone might quote me on that." - Anonymous Teacher, upon being asked for a comment

I think that clearly illustrates my point of the school magazine this year: A controversial, shoddy publication worthy of contempt and ridicule.

Oh, by the way, rumours are going around that our Brotherhood was involved in the publication of the insulting 'Golden Quotes'. I have a very strong conviction that NONE of our brothers were involved. The insulting quotes are the SOLE publication and effort of the author himself. We claim NO responsibility in the publication of the magazine save one essay and the 5 class pages.

No, they won't, Mr. Fong. Caleb said the magazine would be on their agenda for the next staff meeting. No doubt figuring out how to deal with this embarrassing fiasco.

Heads are gonna roll, and personally, I'm glad I'm not one of those responsible for this mess. If anyone wanted an overnight ticket to infamy, this is the best method I've seen. And it'll get worse once the other forms get their magazines.

i'd expect booing, spitting, screaming, mocking, expletives, more explosions, Mr Pan will give a blardy long speech and it's gonna get a hell lot worse than it already is. we live in difficult times people ;P

That has to be the LEAST hurtful to the ear after what everyone else's two cents. Except maybe the 'Liak Chua' part.
